Play with Both D&D 5E Character Sheets in Your Game

You can have both the legacy D&D 5E (2014) and the new D&D 5E (2024) sheets in a single campaign. It's only available in Jumpgate, Roll20’s Improved Tabletop.

Once you’re in a Jumpgate game, you can add a second D&D sheet via the in-VTT game Settings, in Character Sheet Settings section. If your game was created with a legacy D&D 5E (2014) character sheet, you can add the new D&D 5E (2024), and vice versa. From there, you can select either the 2014 or the 2024 version of the sheet when adding a new character to your Journal, or dropping NPCs from the Compendium.

Throughout this article, we’ll refer to the D&D 5E Sheet with which you created the original game as the “primary” sheet.

How do I add a second D&D character sheet to my game?

As a GM, make sure you're in a Jumpgate game, then navigate to Character Sheet Settings via the in-VTT game Settings. Choose "Add Sheet to Game." In the below example, the game was created with the legacy D&D 5E (2014) character sheet, which will be the primary sheet for the game. You will be adding the D&D 5E (2024) sheet to your game.

Once I have added the second character sheet to my game, what does that mean?

When you have both the legacy and the new D&D 5E sheets enabled in the game, as a GM you will be able to specify which sheet you want to use when adding a new character in your journal and dropping an NPC from the Compendium. As a player, you will be able to specify which sheet you want to use when adding a new character to your journal.

When adding a new character, you can use the dropdown or press the “+ Character” button to choose your sheet. If using the “+ Character” button, then a modal will open to prompt you to select a character sheet.

When dropping an NPC from the Compendium, a similar modal will open to prompt you to select a character sheet.

You can also select a default for the sheet you want when creating a new character in your journal or dropping an NPC from the Compendium. See the next section for more about this feature.

Can I set a default for the sheet I want when creating a new character or dropping an NPC?

Yes, you can set a default to avoid that extra step of choosing a sheet every time. You can also remove or change the default in your settings at any time.

As a GM, you have the ability to set different defaults for when you create a new character in your Journal and when drop an NPC from the Compendium. As a player, you have the ability to set a default for when you create a new character in your Journal. You can do that either via the modal which prompts you to choose a character sheet, or in the Character Sheet Settings via the in-VTT game Settings.

Can I remove the second D&D sheet from my game? What happens to characters created with that sheet?

As a GM, you can always remove the secondary D&D sheet you added to your game in the Character Sheet Settings section of your My Settings.

A warning will let you know the following:

  • Only characters with the primary D&D 5E sheet will be available in game.
  • A # of characters using the second sheet will be archived and their associated tokens hidden from maps. You can restore these by re-adding the second sheet via in-VTT game Settings. These will mostly be NPCs, and some PC characters - particularly those that don’t live in Roll20Characters. We wanted to make sure you had the easiest way to reference (at the bottom of your Journal tab) and recover these characters.
  • Names of characters that will be unlinked from the game. Owners of those characters can import them into the game from Roll20 Characters at any time, as long as both D&D 5E sheets are enabled in the game’s settings. With this, we wanted to make sure that Player Characters that were also in player’s Roll20 Characters had the ability to be edited in Roll20 Character and easily brought into other games even if they were unlinked from the original game.

Can I add an addon or module based on the 2014 legacy sheet to my 2024 game, or the reverse?

Yes! In the case you select content that uses a different sheet than your primary sheet, we’ll automatically enable both sheets for you, and direct you to Character Sheet Settings upon game load so you can make any updates from there.

Can I use Mod Scripts in a game that include the legacy 2014 and the new 2024 D&D 5E character sheets?

APIs / mod scripts will work for characters using the primary character sheet. For example, if you first created a game with the legacy 2014 D&D 5E sheet and elected to add the new 2024 character sheet to your game, existing mod scripts will work with the legacy 2014 sheet only. If you first created a game with the new 2024 D&D 5E sheet and elected to add the legacy 2014 character sheet to your game, only mod scripts written to work with the new 2024 sheet will work for characters with the new 2024 sheet.

Will macros & token actions work when multi-selecting characters across the legacy 2014 and the new 2024 D&D 5E sheets?

Macros and token actions will not work when referencing characters from each sheet in the same command. An error message in chat will inform you if that is the case, and guide you to referencing characters on either the legacy or the new D&D 5E sheet separately to take the intended action.

Is there a way to convert my Legacy D&D 5E (2014) Sheet to the New D&D 5E (2024) Sheet?

This is not yet available, but it's coming soon!

Where do I adjust default Game and Sheet settings when I have both, the Legacy D&D 5E (2014) and the New D&D 5E (2024), Sheets in my game?

Campaign settings like turning on Honor or Sanity will need to be set separately for each of the two D&D 5E sheets in your game.

For the legacy D&D 5E (2014) sheet, continue to set default settings in Game Settings by navigating to your Campaign Details Page, and selecting "Game Settings" within the Settings dropdown menu.

The new D&D 5E (2024) Campaign settings are still in development, and are coming soon! Once available, you'll be able to access and adjust them via the in-VTT game Settings, in Character Sheet Settings section.

Individual sheet settings, like always rolling damage with attacks, can be found within the sheet itself: via the cog wheel on the Legacy D&D 5E (2014) sheet or via "manage sheet" on the new D&D 5E (2024) sheet. Additional sheet settings are currently in development for the new sheet with additional settings coming soon.
