What’s Discord? What’s a Discord Activity?
Discord is your all-in-one hub for staying connected with your community, whether you're chatting with friends, organizing game nights, or diving into deep discussions. It's a voice, video, and text app that’s become a home for millions of people around the world—especially tabletop gamers!
A Discord Activity is an interactive feature within Discord that allows users to participate in various activities directly within a channel, whether it’s voice or text. These activities can range from playing games together to watching videos or collaborating on creative projects. For tabletop gamers, the Roll20 Discord Activity now lets you run a whole session from the comfort of your community!
How Do I Get Started With The Activity?
1. Join or create a Voice Channel on any server
To start your adventure, you’ll need to be in a voice channel on a Discord server. If you’re already part of a server where your gaming group gathers, simply click on a voice channel to join it. If there isn’t a suitable channel yet, you can easily create one by clicking the “+” button next to the Voice Channels section in the server. Name it something fitting for your game session, like “Adventurers’ Table” or “Dungeon Crawl,” and jump in!
2. Click the Rocket Ship button, then select Roll20
Once you’re in the voice channel, look for the small rocket ship icon. This button is your gateway to Discord Activities. Click it, and a menu will pop up with a variety of options. From this list, select “Roll20.” This will launch the Roll20 activity within your voice channel, setting up a shared virtual tabletop where you and your friends can play.
3. Invite friends to the Channel or Activity
Now that Roll20 is set up, it’s time to gather your party! You can invite friends directly to the voice channel if they’re already in the server, or if they’re not, you can send them an invite link to join both the server and the activity. To do this, click on the “Invite” button within the voice channel! This ensures everyone you want to game with is in the same virtual space, ready to roll dice and dive into the adventure together.
4. Log in or sign up (first launch only)
If it’s your first time using Roll20 on Discord, you’ll need to log in or sign up for a Roll20 account. Don’t worry—this is quick and easy! A prompt will guide you through the process. Just follow the steps to either log into your existing Roll20 account or create a new one. Once logged in, Roll20 will automatically connect your account to the Discord activity, allowing you to access your games, character sheets, and more.
5. Embark on your adventure!
With everything set up, you’re now ready to embark on your adventure! Whether you’re exploring dungeons, casting spells, or weaving intricate stories, you can do it all through Roll20 while staying connected with your friends via Discord. From within the Activity, browse adventures from Dungeons & Dragons, Marvel Multiverse Role-Playing Game, Call of Cthulhu, Cyberpunk RED, Pathfinder Second Edition, 13th Age, Dune: Adventures in the Imperium, Warhammer Fantasy Role-Play, and Alien: The Roleplaying Game. The virtual tabletop will display maps, character sheets, and more, while the voice channel keeps your group’s communication flowing smoothly. Now, let the adventure begin!
