The Roll20 Connection allows you to sync a Dungeon Scrawl map directly to a Roll20 tabletop in real time. As you draw and make changes in Dungeon Scrawl, they appear automatically on the connected Roll20 page, no exporting or uploading required.
To open the Connect with Roll20 panel, click the Roll20 button in the Sidebar Menu.
How it Works
The connection creates a one-way sync from Dungeon Scrawl to Roll20. Anything visible on your Dungeon Scrawl map (rooms, doors, images, and other drawn elements) will appear on the connected Roll20 page.
The connected map appears on the Map layer in Roll20 at the lowest z-order, meaning anything placed on the Roll20 map layer will appear above it.
A few things to be aware of:
- The sync is one-way. Anything added directly in Roll20 (drawings, images, tokens) will not appear in Dungeon Scrawl.
- Roll20 features such as tokens and Dynamic Lighting lines are not part of the sync and will not appear in Dungeon Scrawl.
- The default map area is 50×50 squares. The Roll20 page will automatically update to match this area.
- Only the default square grid is currently supported. Isometric, dimetric, and hex grids are not available at this time.
Setting up the Connection
There are two ways to set up the connection: creating a new Dungeon Scrawl map from within Roll20, or connecting an existing Dungeon Scrawl map.
Option 1: Create a new map from Roll20
Use this method if you are starting a new map from scratch.
- Open or create the Roll20 tabletop game where you want the map to appear.
- Open the Page Menu in Roll20 and click the dropdown arrow next to Create Page.
- Select Create New Dungeon Scrawl Map.
- A new Dungeon Scrawl tab will open. Your map is now connected to a new Roll20 page, and any changes you make will sync automatically.
Option 2: Connect an existing map
Use this method if you have already started or completed a map in Dungeon Scrawl.
In Dungeon Scrawl, open your map via File → Open, or from your Library if you have a Pro subscription.
- Click the Roll20 button in the Sidebar Menu to open the Connect with Roll20 panel.
- Toggle the connection to On.
- Adjust the displayed area by dragging the preview window to frame the part of your map you want to appear in Roll20.
- Click Copy Connect Code.
- Open or create the Roll20 tabletop game where you want the map to appear.
- From the Roll20 Page Menu dropdown, select Connect Existing Dungeon Scrawl Map.
- Enter a name for the page and paste your Connect Code into the field.
- Click Save and Create Page. Your map is now connected and ready to use.
Saving your map
Closing or refreshing your Dungeon Scrawl tab will end the connected session. To avoid losing your work, save your map before closing using File → Save or ⌘/Ctrl+S.
Dungeon Scrawl Pro subscribers can also rely on Autosave, which stores maps to your account automatically. See [Saving and managing maps] for more information.
Editing a Previously Connected Map
Dungeon Scrawl Pro subscribers
Connected maps retain their connection after closing the tab. To continue editing, open the map from your Library and make your changes. As long as the connection is toggled On in the Connect with Roll20 panel, changes will sync to Roll20 automatically.
Free users
Each session requires a new connect code. To reconnect a previously connected map:
- Open your saved map in Dungeon Scrawl via File → Open.
- Click the Roll20 button in the Sidebar Menu to open the Connect with Roll20 panel.
- Click Copy Connect Code.
- Open the Roll20 tabletop game where the map was previously connected.
- In the Page Toolbar, locate the connected page and click the three-dot menu.
- Select Edit Dungeon Scrawl Link.
- Paste the new Connect Code and click Edit. The page is now reconnected.
Disabling the Connection
There are two ways to disable the connection:
- In Dungeon Scrawl, open the Connect with Roll20 panel and toggle the connection to Off. The connection can be re-enabled at any time.
- In Roll20, navigate to the connected page in the Page Toolbar, click the three-dot menu, and select Edit Dungeon Scrawl Link. Click Remove Dungeon Scrawl to permanently unlink the page from Dungeon Scrawl.
Note: removing the connection from Roll20 is permanent. The page will no longer receive updates from Dungeon Scrawl unless you reconnect it using a new connect code.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is there a limit to the number of maps I can connect?
No. You can create and connect as many maps as you like.
Can I share my Connect Code with other people?
We do not recommend sharing Connect Codes or links to your map. Anyone with access to the code can modify the map, and simultaneous edits can cause syncing issues and lost content.
My map is not centered correctly in Roll20. How do I fix it?
The default map area in Dungeon Scrawl is 50×50 squares. To reposition it, drag the preview area in the Connect with Roll20 panel to center your map within the export area.
If I delete a map from my Dungeon Scrawl library, will it affect the Roll20 connection?
No. Deleting a map from your library does not affect the existing Roll20 connection. However, you will no longer be able to make changes to the connected map unless you reconnect a new Dungeon Scrawl page to the Roll20 page.
Where can I report bugs or submit feedback?
Submit bugs via the Help Center support form. Share feedback and feature requests in the Suggestions and Ideas forum.
