Dungeon Scrawl and Roll20 Connection

Utilize new and easy to use tools from Dungeon Scrawl to create amazing maps that are synced directly to the Roll20 tabletop. This connection provides a variety of new possibilities to optimize and enhance play.

  • Enjoy More Tools: Dungeon Scrawl’s features provide even more options for map-making than Roll20’s built-in drawing tool, allowing you to create with heightened flexibility
  • Save Time: Game Masters who already use Dungeon Scrawl, forget about exporting your creations and uploading them to the tabletop. Now, you can create maps and configure tokens, lighting, and entire scenes seamlessly, getting into the game with less headache.
  • Play With Less Prep: For those who live in the moment, run tons of games, or simply don’t enjoy in-depth game prep, Dungeon Scrawl is the fastest way to get an idea on the table.
  • Improvise: An inevitable aspect of collaborative storytelling is going off-script. Even if you’ve already built your campaign around gorgeous battlemaps purchased from marketplace creators, there’s a high likelihood of party detours or wrong turns in most campaigns. Don’t sweat! Spin up a map faster than you can say, “snack break!”
  • Build Together: Turn map creation into part of the fun! Role-play as a general contractor while your players design their guildhall, bastion, or home base. Dungeon Scrawl lets you collaborate and bring ideas to life in real-time.
  • Real-Time Exploration: Game Masters who enjoy improvisational visuals can delight in the joy of drawing paths as players traverse them live, or “build by random” - using a rollable table to let chance decide what’s behind the next door!
  • Create With Ease: Storytellers, creators, and publishers of adventures looking to create tabletop-ready conversions will find it easier than ever to provide basic maps alongside their written content.

How does it work?

When you set up the Dungeon Scrawl and Roll20 Connection for a map, it creates a one way synchronized map that will project what is shown on Dungeon Scrawl to a map within the Roll20 Tabletop. This projected map is effectively a flat image and will show whatever is actively shown on the Dungeon Scrawl map area.

The area is restricted by default to a 50x50 area which the Roll20 page will automatically be updated to match. From here, as you make edits and changes to the Dungeon Scrawl side, you will see those changes update and show on the Roll20 side as well - all pre-aligned!

Any rooms, doors, images, etc. that you add via Dungeon Scrawl will be projected. However, you can still draw and add images from Roll20, but you will not be able to see those on the Dungeon Scrawl side. The same goes for tokens and features like Dynamic Lighting lines - these are not shown or synced as part of this connection.

How to Access the Connection

This connection enables you to create a new Dungeon Scrawl map or connect an existing Dungeon Scrawl map from any point in your map creation process from within the Roll20 interface. Below outlines the two main methods for setting up the connection.

Create a new Dungeon Scrawl map

  1. Create and/or launch the Roll20 Tabletop game where you'd like to create the map
  2. Open the Page Menu and select the dropdown arrow next to "Create Page"
  3. Select the "Create New Dungeon Scrawl Map" option
  4. A new Dungeon Scrawl tab will open
  5. Your map in Dungeon Scrawl is now connected to a new Page on Roll20, and any updates made to your map will reflect on the virtual tabletop

Important Note

Closing or refreshing your Dungeon Scrawl window or tab will end the connected session. This can result in losing unsaved changes if you wanted to work on your map later. At present, we recommend either of the following:

  • Download a copy of your map from Dungeon Scrawl (File > Save / Save As / Download Save File). Read more.
  • Autosave. Dungeon Scrawl Pro offers cloud storage that automatically saves and stores your maps to your Dungeon Scrawl account. Read more.

Connecting an existing Dungeon Scrawl map

  1. In Dungeon Scrawl, open your map file from your computer (File > Open from save file), or from your autosaved library, if you have Dungeon Scrawl Pro.
  2. Navigate to the Roll20 logo on the left-hand toolbar to open the Connect with Roll20 menu, and toggle Connect On
  3. Adjust the displayed area using shift and your arrow keys, then click the Copy Connect Code button
  4. Create and/or launch the Roll20 Tabletop game where you'd like to connect this map
  5. From the Roll20 Page Menu drop down, select Connect Existing Dungeon Scrawl Map
  6. Name your page and paste your Connect Code in the VTT pop-up.
  7. Click Save and Create Page. Your map is now connected to Roll20 and you’re ready to play!

Editing a previously connected map

For Dungeon Scrawl subscribers, your connected maps will retain their connection meaning that you can continue to make edits after closing the tab or window. Simply re-open the map from the library interface on Dungeon Scrawl and new changes will be propagated to the Roll20 side as well as long as you keep your connection toggled on.

For Free Dungeon Scrawl users, you will need to use a modified version of the "Connecting an existing Dungeon Scrawl map"

  1. Open your saved Dungeon Scrawl map from your computer in Dungeon Scrawl via File > Open from save file
  2. Navigate to the Roll20 logo on the left-hand toolbar to open the Connect with Roll20 menu
  3. Click the Copy Connect Code button
  4. Launch the Roll20 Tabletop game where you'd connected the previous version of this map
  5. Within the Page Toolbar, locate the connected map and click the three vertical dots.
  6. In the menu click "Edit Dungeon Scrawl Link"
  7. Input the new Dungeon Scrawl Map ID Code and click "Edit"

This will reconnect the page to the reuploaded Dungeon Scrawl map so you can continue to make edits.

FAQ

Q. Is there a limit to the number of maps I can make?

Nope! You can make and connect as many maps as you like! Simply use the steps outlined above and you should be all set.

Q. Why do Free users need to re-connect their maps manually?

Free users do not have saved content versions of their map within our database for a connect code to be connected to. As a result, when the session ends a new code is required to re-enable the connection.

Q. Can I share the URL/Connect Code to my Dungeon Scrawl map with others?

We do not recommend sharing your Connect Codes or a link to the map. Any edits made by you or others will reflect in the latest version of the map and can result in lost content. Anyone accessing that link would give power to modify the map.

Q. My map isn't centered properly. How do I fix it?

By default, the Dungeon Scrawl map area is 50x50. You can move this area around within Dungeon Scrawl by holding Shift and pressing the Arrow Keys on the keyboard. This will move the area around to center the map.

Q. Is it possible to change the grid size or type?

At this time, no. Currently only the default 50x50 Square grid is available. Support for isometric, dimetric, and hex grids are something we are investigating and looking towards feedback for prioritization!

Q. Is it possible to disable the connection?

Yep! There are two ways to do this.

  • You can disconnect a map by toggling "Off" within the Dungeon Scrawl interface. Simply navigate back to the Connect with Roll20 Menu and toggle Connection to "Off."
  • You can also do so through the Roll20 Tabletop Page Settings menu. Navigate to the intended page in the Page Toolbar and open the three vertical dots menu to select Edit Dungeon Scrawl Link. Press the Remove Dungeon Scrawl button to disable the connection. This option will permanently un-link the Roll20 Page from Dungeon Scrawl.

Q. If I delete my Dungeon Scrawl Library (Pro), does that impact my VTT map?

Nope! Deleting the map in Dungeon Scrawl does not impact the connection. However, you will no longer be able to make changes without re-connecting a new Dungeon Scrawl page to the existing page.

Q. What layer of the Roll20 Tabletop is the Dungeon Scrawl map on?

The connected map is on the Map Layer. However, it cannot be interacted with like a usual image would be due to the synced nature. However, it is on the lowest Z-Order of the map layer, meaning that anything placed on the map layer will always appear above the Dungeon Scrawl map.
