With our adventure fleshed out and complete, we just need characters that our players will use in order to interact with the story!
If this is your first session ever, then one of the best options is to create some pre-generated characters for players to use. This helps provide a quick jumping off point to get to playing immediately. You can always come back and create new characters later.
To start making characters, navigate to your journal and click the "+ Character" button.
Once done, you will see a pop up window containing some settings and options for the character you just made.
1. This is the name for your character. Typically a randomly generated name is provided, but if you use the pre-generated characters provided by the 2024 sheet this will be changed to match the name automatically.
2. "In Player's Journals" provides view only access to a character sheet so players can see it in their own journal interface. Do note, that with the 2024 sheet, they will not be able to see the actual character statistics or details.
3. "Can be edited & controlled by" is the most crucial setting for your players. When someone has decided to play a specific character and needs access to the sheet to make rolls and modify, they need this enabled for them. If they create the sheet themself as a player, this will automatically be set. If you create the character as the GM you will need to set this manually after they have joined the game.
After saving, you will be taken to the character creation splash page where you will have some options on how to proceed. The Roll20 character builder offers some pre-generated characters directly in the interface that you can choose from which is what we will be using in this guide.
However, the Roll20 builder (Accessed by clicking "Build a New Character") will walk through every aspect of creating a character from scratch as well and makes character creation a breeze! So feel free to give it a try!
There are currently either ready made characters to choose from, with varying level availability as well. Simply choose to preview a character and select the level you want to use -- in our case, we are 3rd level so we'll choose that option.
The current roster includes:
- Fred Strong - Fighter
- Hjonk - Barbarian
- Aoife Sorrell - Wizard Ranger Multiclass
- Hyne Herostar - Paladin
- Lucia Lozoya - Warlock
- Fin Xarkith - Bard
- Taamira al-Shakur - Sorcerer Bard Multiclass
- Bran Blossombottom - Monk Bard Multiclass
Now that you've got some pre-generated characters created, it is the perfect opportunity to start inviting your players to the game! You can do this via the "Invite Players" button showcased outside of the game previously, or you can also get an invite link from within the game as well using either of the methods shown below.

Once the have joined, just assign the character permissions from the character sheet and you will be all set! To re-access the character settings, re-open the sheet and click the icon located here:
