11. Finding players

Previous Article - 10. Using Roll20 to play

With everything we've worked through and discussed, you should be all set to run your first adventure! However, I have some additional resources below which may be helpful if you still need to put together a group or are just starting with a new group.

Session 0

First is the concept of a "Session 0" -- this is an opportunity to set expectations and can work as a great transition into the full game. Take time to ask your players what their playstyle might be. How interested are they in combat? How much do they want to know about the world? Is storytelling important? This information will help you prioritize your effort when preparing.

Many GMs also use Session 0 as the "Character Building" session to teach players how to make characters or how their character functions. Time allowing, you can always throw in a quick tavern brawl!

I also recommend checking out the TTRPG Safety Toolkit which provides guidance on discussing boundaries. We never know what is going to happen when we start playing, and this can make sure we handle those moments well.

More GM Tools

We showed off a few tools to use in this guide, but there are TONS out there for you to use. We have a community contributed collection which you can check out here: The GM Hub

From Map generators, creation tools, random name generators, and more, it's got it all; and can make prepping your future sessions a breeze!

Finding a group

Lastly, if you are just starting out and don't have a group just yet, there are a few places you can go to find others.

Best of luck on your adventures out there! And good loot!
