Rollback is a Pro feature that allows creators of the game to restore to a previously saved state up to 7 days in the past.
Rollback save states are collected for every game on Roll20 starting 4AM PST. The system keeps those save states for seven days before they are overwritten with new ones. This allows for mistakes made in a game, such as deleting a map or character sheet, to be corrected.
Performing a Roll Back
To perform a rollback, first navigate to the game details page of your game and click the "Settings" button on the page and then click "Roll Back Game" in the dropdown menu.
Once you have done this, you will see a pop up window appear prompting you to choose a date you would like to roll back to. Select the date you would like to use and click the "Roll Back" button and it will begin.
Depending on the size of your game, this may take a few moments after which you can re-launch your game.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I have to already have a subscription to access previous dates?
Nope! Rollback save states are gathered for ALL accounts regardless of subscription level. The ability to access and use those save states is what requires the subscription. This provides the ability to gain immediate access to the full week of backups as soon as you subscribe.
Why didn't my Rollback attempt work?
There are two main reasons for this:
The first is that you may have chosen a date that was too soon and the restore point was slightly off. We recommend typically going an additional day further back than what you may expect just to make sure it is fully restored.
The second is the size of your game may be too large. If you have an exceedingly large game, it can cause the database to fail during the rollback process and not be able to recover the previous states. At present we do not have a workaround for this issue, but you can contact our support team to see if this may have been the cause.
Why did my Rollback work, but I am still missing information?
Because the Rollback system only captures a save state once per day it is best suited for recovery in a longer time span. If you created and then accidentally deleted a character or map in between two save times then it will not be captured in the rollback to be recovered.
Can I undo a Rollback?
It is not possible to undo a Rollback at this time aside from using another Rollback from a different date.
We highly recommend making a copy of your game before performing any Rollbacks to ensure you have a reference point in the event of any unforeseen issues or errors.
Can I Rollback only specific parts of my game?
No. The Rollback system is an all-or-nothing tool. Performing a Rollback will restore everything in a game to that previously saved state.
I am a Co-GM of a game, can I use the Rollback?
No. Only the game's creator can utilize the Rollback tool and must have a Pro subscription to utilize it.
My game is in cold storage, do I need to use a Rollback?
No. If your game is in cold storage, simply click the "Restore Game" button and it should return after a few moments! If you have any issues you can contact our support team who can help resolve any problems.
