How to Use the Modifier Builder (D&D 2024)

The Modifier Builder was released in July 2025 for the D&D 2024 Character Builder.

Want your custom Background, Species, or Class to do more? With the Modifier Builder, you can make them automatically change Abilities, Skills, and apply bonuses!

What Is the Modifier Builder?

The Modifier Builder lets you create character features that attach working modifiers and effects, such as:

  • Giving your character a +1 to Strength
  • Letting you fly equal to 5 × your Proficiency Bonus
  • Automatically adding Languages or Tool Proficiencies

How To Add a Modifier

  1. During character building, choose Custom Background, Species or Class.
  2. Add or edit a Feature.
  3. Under Modifiers, click Add.
  4. Choose the modifier type (like Speed, Ability Score, or Resource).
  5. Set the value.
  6. Click Save

You’ll see the effect show up right on your character sheet.

How Modifiers Work

1. Set the Base Score:  “What does this stat start at?”

Example: You create a Species with a Feature called Metal Skin that sets a base Armor Class of 15 when not wearing armor. AC 15 now replaces your usual unarmored base AC of 10.

2. Modify & Add a Value:  “What bonuses apply on top?”

Example: You give a Feature that adds +2 to Armor Class. If your base AC is 15 (from Metal Skin), this bonus stacks to make it 17 AC.

3. Apply Minimum / Maximum: “What’s the floor or ceiling?”

Example: You create a magical Feature that says: “Your Strength score can’t be lower than 19.” If your Strength would normally be 16, it’s automatically bumped up to 19. If it’s already 20, the minimum doesn’t change anything.

The opposite applies for Maximum.

4. Apply Multiplier: “Scale this stat by multiplying it.”

Example: You add a Feature that gives: “Flying speed = 5 × your Proficiency Bonus.” At level 5 (Prof. Bonus = +3), you get 15 ft of flying speed. Multipliers apply after other bonuses are totaled (unless a Set Value overrides them).

Pro Tip: Multiply a value by -1 to subtract that value from your total instead of adding it!

5. Override: "Set this value that overrides Everything."

If a Feature sets a fixed number for something (like “Strength = 21”), it overrides everything else. This is useful for homebrew situations where your data shouldn't be calculated, or NPCs where sometimes calculations don't make sense.

What Can You Modify?

The Modifier Builder supports a wide variety of stat types. Here are a few:

  • Ability Scores (Strength, Dexterity, etc.)
  • Ability Score Modifiers (the bonus you add to rolls)
  • Skill Bonuses (like +2 to Stealth)
  • Saving Throws (or Saving Throw Proficiency)
  • Speed (new movement types or faster speeds)
  • Armor Class
  • Initiative
  • Hit Points (adjust max HP)
  • Languages
  • Senses (like Darkvision or Tremorsense)
  • Tool, Weapon, Armor, or Skill Proficiencies
  • Custom Defenses (like damage resistance or immunity)
  • New or modified Resources (e.g., spell points, rage uses)
  • Spell Attack or DC Bonuses
  • Weapon Attack Bonuses

If your character sheet tracks it, you can probably modify it.
