Saving your map creates an editable .ds file.
Dungeon Scrawl does not save your work automatically unless you have a Dungeon Scrawl Pro subscription. Save early and often to avoid losing progress.
Saving your Map
- To save your map, press ⌘/Ctrl+S or go to File → Save. This saves your map as a .ds file to your computer.
- To save a copy of your map to a new file, go to File → Save as (⌘/Ctrl+Shift+S).
- To open a previously saved .ds file, go to File → Open (⌘/Ctrl+O) and select the file from your computer.
Note: If you close or refresh the browser without saving, your unsaved progress will be lost.
Multiple maps in one file (Dungeon Scrawl Pro)
A single .ds file can contain multiple maps. This is useful for storing multiple locations together without switching between files.
- To add a new map, Pro subscribers can click + Add a map in the Maps Settings panel in the right sidebar.
- To rename a map, double-click its name in the same panel.
Importing maps from another file
To combine two .ds files, click + Import from savefile in the Maps Settings panel. Maps from the imported file will be added as separate maps in the panel and will not affect your existing map.
Autosave and Map Library (Dungeon Scrawl Pro)
Dungeon Scrawl Pro subscribers have access to Autosave and an unlimited personal map Library. Maps are saved automatically to cloud storage as you work, so you never need to save manually.
Autosave
When Autosave is active, a status indicator in the top right of the interface shows the current save state:
- Unsaved Changes: changes have been made that have not yet been saved
- Saving to Library: changes are being saved (do not exit or refresh if you see this)
- Saved to Library: all changes have been saved successfully
- Error: a problem occurred while saving. If you see this state, save a local copy using File → Save as a precaution
Disabling Autosave
Autosave can be disabled from your account settings. Disabling it will also disable access to the Library. If you refresh or reopen Dungeon Scrawl after disabling Autosave, you will be prompted to enable it again. Your maps will still be available in the Library when you re-enable it.
Unlimited Cloud Library
The Library gives you access to all your saved maps in one place. To open the Library, go to File → Library or press ⌘/Ctrl+O.
The Library displays a thumbnail for each map, ordered by most recently opened. From the Library, you can:
- Open a map by clicking its thumbnail
- Create a new map
- Rename (recommended!), duplicate, or delete a map by hovering over its thumbnail and clicking the three-dot menu in the bottom right corner.
Note: the Library is separate from the multiple maps feature described above. Maps stored within a single .ds file are still accessible within that file as before, and are also saved to the Library via Autosave.
Exporting Your Map
When your map is finished, you can export it as a PNG, WebP, or PDF (Dungeon Scrawl Pro).
For full details, see [Exporting Your Map].
