This guide walks you through creating a simple map in Dungeon Scrawl in five minutes or less. For more details on any step, follow the links to the relevant articles.

1. Choose a Style

Open the Presets panel by clicking the Scrawl button in the Sidebar Menu. Click any Dungeon Preset to apply it as your starting layer. This sets the visual style of your map; walls, floor, grid, and shading are all controlled by the preset.

Not sure which to choose? Classic Hatching is a good starting point.

See Scrawl/Presets for more information.

2. Draw a Room

The Rectangle tool is selected by default. Click and drag on the canvas to draw a room.

See Rectangle tool for more information.

3. Add a Second Room

Draw another rectangle adjacent to the first. A shared wall will appear automatically between the two rooms.

To connect the rooms instead of separating them with a wall, overlap the two rectangles slightly when drawing.

4. Place a Door

Select the Door tool by pressing D or clicking it in the Toolbar. Click two points on a wall to place a door.

See Door tool for more information.

5. Save Your Map

Press ⌘/Ctrl+S to save your map as a .ds file to your computer.
To avoid losing your work, save regularly. If you close or refresh the browser without saving, your progress will be lost.

See Saving and Managing Maps for more information.

Useful Tips

Doors and stairs not visible?

If you place a door or staircase and cannot see it on the map, check that the Images folder is at the top of the Layers menu in the right sidebar. Doors and stairs may be hidden beneath a Dungeon layer if the Images folder has been moved below it.

See Managing Layers for more information.
