The Lighting panel allows you to add dynamic lighting to your map. Click the Lighting button in the Sidebar Menu to open it.
Each light has two zones of illumination:
- Bright light is the inner area at full brightness (100% of the light's intensity)
- Dim light is the outer area at half brightness (50% of the light's intensity)
Setting Up Lighting
To enable lighting, toggle lighting on in the Lighting panel.
Adding a Light
Configure your light using the Add Light section of the Lighting Panel, then click Add to place it on the map. (Lights can be repositioned and edited after placement.)
The size of each zone is controlled by the Radius and Bright Radius settings.
Light Presets
Choose from a list of preset light sources modeled on common fantasy RPG light sources. Selecting a preset pre-fills the Radius and Bright Radius fields with appropriate values. (Choose Other to enter your own custom values.)
Available presets (based on D&D 5e light sources):
- Light (cantrip): 20-foot radius of bright light, plus an additional 20 feet of dim light.
- Torch: 20-foot radius of bright light, plus an additional 20 feet of dim light.
- Lamp: 15-foot radius of bright light, plus an additional 30 feet of dim light.
- Continual Flame (spell): 20-foot radius of bright light, plus an additional 20 feet of dim light.
- Lantern: 30-foot radius of bright light, plus an additional 30 feet of dim light.
- Other: Set your own values manually.
Colour
The color of the light. Click the swatch to choose a color.
Radius
The total reach of the light, measured in map units (squares or hexes) for consistency with in-game distance. The light reaches its full extent at this radius and fades to nothing beyond it.
Bright Radius
The inner radius where the light is at full strength. Inside the Bright Radius, the light is at 100% Intensity; between the Bright Radius and the outer Radius, the light falls to 50% Intensity (dim light). Set Bright Radius to 0 for a light that's entirely dim, or set it equal to Radius for a light with no dim falloff.
Intensity
The overall strength of the light. A value of 1 is full strength; lower values produce a weaker light.
Moving Lights
Lights can be moved around the map using the Object tool in the same way as any other image.
Light Blocking
Each Dungeon layer can be set to block light at its walls. To toggle this setting, select the layer in the Layers menu and look for the Blocks Light option in the Layer Settings panel.
