Secret and Super-Secret Rolls

Secret Rolls and Super-Secret Rolls send a dice result exclusively to the GM. They're useful any time the GM needs the roller (or any other player) not to see the result of.

Command What the roller sees What the GM sees What other players see
/sr or /secretroll Confirmation only ("You have sent a secret roll to the GM") roll result + roller’s name nothing
/ssr or /supersecretroll nothing roll result + roller’s name nothing

Note: 3D dice are automatically disabled for both commands (for the player who shouldn't see them).

Secret Roll

/sr or /secretroll

Use a Secret Roll when a player needs to roll, but the GM doesn’t want them to know whether they succeeded or failed; like for Perception or Stealth checks, creature identification, or any other roll where the outcome could influence gameplay.

To create a Secret Roll, type /sr followed by your roll formula in chat: /sr 1d20+5

When the roll is made:

  • The GM receives the result and the name of the roller
  • The roller sees a confirmation message: "You have sent a secret roll to the GM"… but no result
  • Other players see nothing in chat

Secret Rolls can also be initiated from the Dice Roller by selecting Secret as the roll type.

Super-Secret Roll

/ssr or /supersecretroll

Use a Super-Secret Roll when players shouldn't know that a roll happened at all. This is the right tool for GMs to use when setting up trap triggers, automated Reactions, and any situation where even a confirmation message would affect player behavior.

To use, type /ssr followed by your roll formula in chat or in a Reaction's Send to Chat input: /ssr 1d20

When the roll is made:

  • The GM receives the result and the name of the roller
  • The roller sees nothing
  • Other players see nothing

Setting Up a Trap with Super-Secret Rolls

Super-Secret Rolls work with Token Reactions, making it possible to trigger a hidden roll automatically when a player moves onto a trap token.

  1. Double-click the token that will trigger your trap (to make it invisible, set its opacity to 0%)
  2. In Token Settings, go to the Advanced tab and click Send to Chat
  3. In the text input, type /ssr followed by your desired roll: /ssr 1d20
  4. Check Automatic Reset if the trap should be able to activate more than once

Factoring in Attribute Modifiers

To incorporate a character's sheet attributes (like a Dexterity bonus) into the roll, use the syntax: /ssr roll + @{selected|attribute}. For example: /ssr 1d20 + @{selected|dexterity_save_bonus}

selected will always identify the character controlling the token that set off the trap, regardless of the game system. The dice expression and attribute name will vary depending on the sheet and the type of roll.

Here are a few common examples:

D&D Fifth Edition (5E & 5.5E and Classic)

  • /ssr 1d20 + @{selected|dexterity_save_bonus}
  • /ssr 1d20 + @{selected|constitution_save_bonus}
  • /ssr 1d20 + @{selected|wisdom_save_bonus}

Pathfinder 2e by Demiplane

  • /ssr 1d20 + @{selected|reflex}
  • /ssr 1d20 + @{selected|fortitude}
  • /ssr 1d20 + @{selected|will}

Pathfinder 2e by Roll20

  • /ssr 1d20 + @{selected|saving_throws_reflex}
  • /ssr 1d20 + @{selected|saving_throws_fortitude}
  • /ssr 1d20 + @{selected|saving_throws_will}

Daggerheart (supported via Demiplane)

  • /ssr 2d12 + @{selected|agility}
  • /ssr 2d12 + @{selected|instinct}
  • /ssr 2d12 + @{selected|knowledge}

To find attribute names for other sheets, open the character sheet and check the Attributes & Abilities tab (on newer sheets, look under Advanced Tools > Attributes).

A Few Things Worth Knowing

  • Secret and Super-Secret Rolls are different from GM Rolls. A /gmroll shows the result to both the GM and the roller. With /sr and /ssr, the result goes only to the GM.
  • These commands are system-agnostic. They work via chat for every game on Roll20, regardless of what Character Sheet is in use.
  • The GM's chat shows a fog texture on Secret Roll results as a visual indicator that the roll is for their eyes only.
  • Sound notifications: GMs with chat notifications enabled will hear a sound when a Secret or Super-Secret Roll result comes in.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does this work with my character sheet?
Secret Rolls can be initiated from chat or the Dice Roller regardless of system. Super-Secret Rolls can reference sheet attributes when used in Reactions. Direct integration with sheet roll buttons isn't currently available, but if that's something you'd like to see, let us know which sheet you'd want it on.

Can players initiate Secret Rolls, or only GMs?
Secret Rolls (/sr) were designed primarily for players to use, since they send their roll result to the GM without seeing it themselves. Super-Secret Rolls (/ssr) are better suited for GM game-prep, like setting up Reaction rolls for traps and automated events.

What's the difference between /sr and /ssr?
/sr sends the result to the GM and shows the roller a brief confirmation that a roll was sent. /ssr sends the result to the GM with no output for the roller at all.

Do Secret Rolls make noise?
Yes. GMs with chat notifications enabled will hear a sound when a Secret or Super-Secret Roll result arrives. If you're anticipating a player to set off an invisible trap, you may want to mute your mic or have an explanation ready.
