Introduction
Roll20 is built alongside the contributions of the community: talented folks who create character sheets, macros, mod scripts, and other tools that make the platform better for everyone. The purpose of this policy is the protection and long-term sustainability of that creative community.
While generative AI tools have become integrated into contemporary workflows, our priority remains the preservation of authentic human creativity within the Roll20 ecosystem. We acknowledge that these technologies can be used responsibly to augment rather than substitute for human authorship, and that an outright ban would be impractical. Consequently, this policy seeks to balance the utility of these tools with our commitment to ensuring that all creative content shared through official Roll20 channels is a product of genuine human effort.
This policy establishes clear rules about what is and is not permitted. Contributions that comply with this policy are not required to individually disclose AI usage.
Scope
This policy applies to contributions made through official Roll20 channels, listed below. It does not apply to custom mod scripts that users wish to use in their own games that are not contributed to these channels.

- Mod Scripts submitted to the Roll20 Mod Library
The Roll20 Marketplace is governed by a separate policy and is not covered here.
Across these channels, the policy applies to all of the following kinds of contributed content:
- Technical assets: HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and Mod Scripts.
- Written text: descriptions, customer-facing documentation, in-sheet copy, and any other human-readable language that is used to support the sheet or script.
- Visual assets: artwork, icons, illustrations, backgrounds, and other images.
What This Policy Covers
This policy concerns generative AI, which includes the hints such as large language models (LLMs) and diffusion models; the categories of tools used to generate text and imagery from prompts.
It does not apply to other technologies that are sometimes grouped under the broader "AI" or "machine learning" umbrella. For example, procedural generation and traditional machine learning fall outside the scope of this policy.
Technical Content
Technical assets such HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and Mod Scripts may be generated or assisted with generative AI tools. We recognize that these tools are now a common part of how code gets written, and we do not prohibit their use here.
This permission comes with a condition: the person submitting the work is fully responsible for the quality and function of everything they submit, regardless of how it was produced. Responsibility is not diminished or shared with the tool. If an AI-generated script behaves incorrectly, introduces a security issue, infringes on someone else’s work, or otherwise fails to meet Roll20’s standards, Roll20 reserves the right to remove that script from the Roll20 Mod Library.
Because of this, we strongly discourage "vibe coding" (generating code from a prompt and submitting it without genuinely understanding what it does). A contributor must be able to read, explain, debug, and stand behind all of the code they submit. AI can help you write code; it cannot take responsibility for it.
Creative Content
Creative content must originate from the person submitting the work, or the human teammates that they worked with to create. This covers all creative written text and all audio and visual assets, including artwork, and music. Usage of AI to create technical documentation is allowed, however.
The defining requirement is one of origination: the creative substance – the words, the imagery, the design – must come from a person.
Generative AI tools may be used to assist with work that a human has already created. Acceptable assistance includes editing, proofreading, post-processing, and formatting. For example, using an AI tool to catch typos in human-written documentation, or to clean up the formatting of human-authored copy, is permitted. Using one to wholesale write that copy or generate that art is not.
Disclosure
Contributors whose individual contributions comply with this policy are not required to disclose whether or how AI tools were used. This policy sets the rules for what is acceptable; as long as a contribution falls within those rules, no per-submission AI disclosure is necessary.
Conversely, contributions that do not utilize AI in any way, shape, or form are encouraged to note that they are No-AI in their description and marketing copy.
Enforcement
Contributions that do not comply with this policy will be removed. This includes creative content that did not originate from human creative work, and technical contributions where the contributor is unable or unwilling to take responsibility for the submitted code. Failure to follow these guidelines or misrepresenting how AI was used may result in permanent de-listing of the offending sheet or Mod Script. Repeated bad-faith violations may result in a permanent ban from submitting packages for official listing.
