The Layers menu is found in the right sidebar. It displays all layers and folders on your map and allows you to organize them. This article covers how to create, organize, and manage layers.
Creating Layers
New layers are created from the Presets panel in the left sidebar. Hover over any preset to reveal two options:
- Add new layer: creates a new layer above the existing one using the selected preset style.
- Apply to current layer: overwrites the settings of the currently selected layer with those of the preset.
For more information on presets, see Scrawl/Presets.
Renaming layers
Double-click any layer or folder name in the Layers menu to rename it. Clear, descriptive names are recommended, especially on complex maps. For example, "Cave upper level" rather than "Cave".
Dungeon layers are named automatically based on the preset used to create them. For example, the first layer created using the Classic Hatching preset will be named Classic Hatching 1, the second Classic Hatching 2, and so on.
Reordering layers
Click and drag any layer or folder to reorder it. The order of layers in the Layers menu determines what is visible on the map. Layers higher in the list appear on top of layers below them.
Creating and using folders
Click the + icon in the Layers menu to create a new folder. To add a layer to a folder, drag it onto the folder. To nest a folder inside another folder, drag it into an existing folder.
To expand or collapse a folder, hover over it and click the arrow on the left side.
Hiding and showing layers
Hover over any layer name and click the eye icon to hide or show that layer. Hiding a layer does not delete it, it remains part of the map and can be made visible again at any time.
Hiding a folder will hide all layers and objects within it.
Duplicating layers
Right-click any layer in the Layers menu and select Duplicate from the context menu.
Deleting layers
Right-click any layer in the Layers menu and select Delete from the context menu.
Sending layers to the front or back
Right-click any layer in the Layers menu and select Send to front or Send to back from the context menu. This has the same effect as dragging the layer to the top or bottom of its folder.
Locking the Background layer
Click the padlock icon next to the Background layer to lock it. A locked Background layer will not be overwritten when new layers are added. This is recommended once you are happy with your background settings.
The Images folder
The Images folder is a default folder that contains all objects placed on your map, including doors, stairs, text, and any uploaded or preset images. Each object is listed as its own entry within the folder.
In most cases, keep the Images folder at the top of the Layers menu to ensure objects appear above the map. You can reorder objects within the folder to control which objects appear on top of others.
To edit an object's settings, select it using the Object tool on the map. Clicking an object's name in the Layers menu will not open its settings. For more information on object-specific settings, see the relevant tool articles:
Limitations
- You cannot select, move, or delete multiple layers at once. Regular organization is recommended, especially on complex maps.
- Maps are not saved automatically unless you have a Dungeon Scrawl Pro subscription. See Saving and Managing Maps for more information.
