The Stairs tool places staircases on your map. Press B+0 to select it.

Stairs are placed in the Images layer. If a staircase is not visible after placing, check that the Images layer is on top in the Layers menu. See Managing Layers for more details.

Placing Stairs

Click three points to place a staircase:

  • The first two points set the position and width of the top step.
  • The third point sets the position of the bottom step.

To move or delete a staircase after placing it, use the Object tool.

Tool Settings

Use the Tool Settings panel to set the style of staircases before placing them.

Snap

When Snap is on, points align to the grid based on the current Division setting. To toggle snapping on or off with a keyboard shortcut, press S.

Division

Sets the snapping resolution as a fraction of a grid cell. Works the same way as in the Rectangle tool. To set the division with a keyboard shortcut, press Shift+S followed by a number representing the denominator. For example, Shift+S then 2 sets 1/2 cell snapping, and Shift+S then 3 sets 1/3 cell snapping.

Steps per cell

Sets the number of stair steps drawn within each grid cell. A higher value produces more steps per cell, which can indicate a longer or steeper staircase depending on the scale of your map. To adjust the steps per cell with a keyboard shortcut, press [ to decrease or ] to increase. You can also type a value directly into the input field, or use the slider.

Stroke

Sets the colour of the staircase lines. Enter a hex colour value in the input field, or click the colour swatch to open the colour picker.

Rough

Sets the roughness of the staircase lines. Off produces clean lines. Levels 1, 2, and 3 produce increasingly irregular lines.

Editing a Placed Staircase

To edit a staircase after it has been placed, select it using the Object tool. The Layer Settings panel will update to show editable options for the selected staircase.
