General

What is Dungeon Scrawl?
Dungeon Scrawl is a free online mapmaking tool for TTRPGs. It allows you to create maps quickly, no experience required, and export them for use in print or on virtual tabletop platforms.

Do I need an account to use Dungeon Scrawl?
No. You can use Dungeon Scrawl without an account. However, a free account is required to save image favorites, and a Dungeon Scrawl Pro subscription is required to access features such as Autosave, the map Library, World Building Presets, Custom Presets, and commercial use rights. (see Dungeon Scrawl Pro Features for details.)

Saving and Files

How do I save my map?
Press ⌘/Ctrl+S or go to File → Save. Maps are saved as .ds files to your computer. See [Saving and managing maps] for more information.

Will I lose my map if I close the browser?
If you close or refresh the browser without saving, your unsaved progress will be lost. Save regularly using ⌘/Ctrl+S. Dungeon Scrawl Pro subscribers have Autosave, which saves maps to the cloud automatically.

How do I open a saved map?
Go to File → Open (⌘/Ctrl+O) and select your .ds file. Pro subscribers can also open maps directly from their Library.

Can I combine two saved map files?
Yes, if you are a Dungeon Scrawl Pro subscriber. Open one map, then click + Import from savefile in the Maps Settings panel in the right sidebar. Maps from the imported file will be added as separate maps and will not affect your existing map. See Saving and Managing Maps for more information.

Exporting

How do I export my map?
Click the Export button (the down arrow icon) in the Sidebar Menu. Select your file format, adjust the export area if needed, and click Export. See Export/Sharing for more information.

Why is my exported map smaller than the export area?
You may be reaching your browser's export resolution limit. Try reducing the pixels (px) per cell value, exporting a smaller area, or enabling High-res export (Dungeon Scrawl Pro). See Export/Sharing for more information.

What file formats can I export to?
PNG and WebP are available to all users. PDF and High-res exports are available to Dungeon Scrawl Pro subscribers.

Can I export my map for use in Roll20 or other virtual tabletops?
Yes. The default export setting of 70 px per cell is compatible with Roll20 and most other virtual tabletop platforms. Alternatively, the Roll20 Connect feature connects Dungeon Scrawl maps with pages within Roll20 campaigns. See Connect to Roll20 for more information.

Tools and Drawing

How do I zoom in and out?
Scroll with your mouse wheel, or press + and -. On Mac, you can also pinch the trackpad or press Ctrl+Scroll. See Pan and Zoom for more information.

How do I undo a mistake?
Press ⌘/Ctrl+Z to undo. Press ⌘/Ctrl+Shift+Z to redo. You can also use Edit → Undo and Edit → Redo in the Global Navigation Bar.

How do I delete a door or staircase?
Select it using the Object tool, then press Backspace or Delete. See Object tool for more information.

Why can't I see my doors or stairs?
Check that the Images folder is at the top of the Layers menu in the right sidebar. Doors and stairs may be hidden beneath a Dungeon layer if the Images folder has been moved below it. See Managing layers for more information.

How do I create an isometric map?
Enable isometric mode from the View menu in the Global Navigation Bar, or from the Isometric setting in the Background layer. See Layer Settings for more information.

How do I use a hex grid?
Select the Background layer in the Layers menu, then change the Grid Type to Hex in the Layer Settings panel. See Layer Settings for more information.

How do I select geometry drawn with the drawing tools?
Use the Select tool (B+8). The Object tool is for selecting objects such as doors, stairs, text, and images. See Select tool and Object tool for more information.

Layers

Do I need to use layers?
No. A single Dungeon layer is enough to create a complete map. Layers become useful when you want to add complexity, such as multiple floors, styles, or annotations. See Introduction to Layers for more information.

Why has my map style changed after adding a new layer?
Adding a new layer with a different preset style can affect the overall appearance of your map. To restore your original style, select the layer you want to keep and click Apply to current layer in the Presets panel (or Ppress ⌘/Ctrl+Z to undo the change you don't like). See Scrawl/Presets for more information.

How do I lock the background so it doesn't change?
Click the padlock icon next to the Background layer in the Layers menu. See Managing Layers for more information.

Commercial Use

Can I use Dungeon Scrawl maps commercially?
Commercial use requires a Dungeon Scrawl Pro subscription active at the time of map creation. Specific attribution is also required. See [Commercial use policy] for full details.

Do I need to credit the asset contributors if I use their images?
Yes, if you use Dungeon Scrawl library images from contributors in a commercially published work, you must include the relevant credit lines. See Commercial Use Policy for the full list of required credits.

Dungeon Scrawl Pro

What features are included in Dungeon Scrawl Pro?
Dungeon Scrawl Pro includes Unlimited Cloud Library, Autosave to Cloud, Commercial Use Rights, More Layers and Textures, Custom Presets, Shareable Map Links, Saved Library, PDF and High-res Export, Lighting Effects, and more.

How do I access my map Library? (Dungeon Scrawl Pro)
Go to File → Library or press ⌘/Ctrl+O. See [Saving and managing maps] for more information.

Can I still export and save manually if I have a Pro subscription?
Yes. File → Save, Save as, and Open work the same way for all users regardless of subscription status.

Roll20 Connection

Is there a limit to how many maps I can connect to Roll20?
No. You can connect as many maps as you like.

Can I share my Roll20 Connect Code with other people?
We do not recommend sharing Connect Codes. Anyone with access to the code can modify the map, and simultaneous edits can cause syncing issues. See Connect to Roll20 for more information.

Does deleting a map from my Library affect its Roll20 connection?
No. The existing Roll20 connection will remain active, but you will no longer be able to make changes to the connected map unless you reconnect it. See Connect to Roll20 for more information.
